Behind the Style
Danya Li is a Brooklyn-based architectural designer and photographer who thinks that architects need to start branching out from their all black wardrobes. We chatted with her about her “colorful industrial” design style, her favorite cameras to shoot on, and some items that are on the top of her wishlist.

Where are you based?
Brooklyn, NY.
What do you do for work?
I’m a freelance architectural designer and photographer.
How did you get started in that?
I actually thought I wanted to be a fashion designer until about the 7th grade. I was a huge Latin nerd and really loved Italian architecture, but didn’t know that designing buildings was a job. So once I found that out I pivoted to architecture because I found myself much more drawn to structures and buildings.
What’s your favorite building?
The Hearst Tower in NYC, which was designed by one of my favorite studios, Foster + Partners.
What is your design process like?
I usually ask myself, “Okay what’s the overall objective? What’s something that would make me and my peers go ‘Ooouuu’?” and go from there. I outline my deliverables and then jump to mood boarding–I really enjoy taking inspiration from my environment, so I snap photos when I’m traveling or taking mindless walks in NYC. I try to break down what it is I like about certain images, objects, or spaces and then use that as a starting point. I work a lot through photographing my work, so I understand what people will be taking away with them after leaving a space I’ve designed and using the frame of a photo to influence vignettes around the space.
How would you describe your personal style?
“Casual but flirty.” I love my denim collection and work coats, but also gotta toss on those knee high booties or a top that shows some skin to spice things up. I work from home most of the time being freelance, so I live in my Mate the Label sweatsuits. I definitely don’t think I’m up to date with the trends, so my closet is a mish mosh of random items, a lot of them secondhand.
What’s your favorite item in your closet and/or something you’ll never get rid of?
My Consistency Project jeans. They cost me an arm and a leg but I was able to work with them on the style of the pant (seams, washes, and even got the shorts fit to my measurements). They’re definitely a pair that I’ll be repairing and hope to still wear when I’m 80.
If you could have access to anyone’s closet, who would it be and why?
Nicole McLaughlin. I would love to be able to wear any one of her funky, silly, and sometimes practical pieces.
What are some Items that are top of your wishlist?
1. Sundae School’s Black Fencing Down Vest
What are a couple of your favorite pieces in your BARO closet?
My DISSH asymmetrical dress—architects are known for having a closet filled with black clothing and I’m guilty of that, but I told myself if it’s going to be neutral, then it at least has to be a fun piece. Same with my C/MEO Collective strapless jumpsuit, it’s really comfortable but also has some structure in the corseted top. I also have a green pair of Wildfang long sleeve coveralls that I love.
Okay before we wrap up, we have a few rapid fire questions for you....
Favorite camera to shoot on?
Nikon F2 film camera my partner bought me, or my handy dandy Sony Cyber-shot digi camera so I don’t have to pull out my phone at events
Favorite interior design movement?
Mid-century modern—it’s timeless and chic.
Interior design trend you hate?
Maximalism. I think it took off really fast and there’s definitely a right and a wrong way to do it.
Holy grail skincare item?
Sunscreen! I recently picked up a few from Japan that I’m enjoying.
Favorite show right now?
For All Mankind!
Favorite place you’ve traveled?
Went to Tokyo for the first time this year, it definitely takes first place.
Favorite place to shop in your city?
Front General Store. They have such a great collection of new Japanese and American workwear and a great vintage selection. Also a really great home and gift section.
Favorite restaurant?
Rose Mary in Chicago, just ate there this past fall and it was soooo good.
Favorite brands of the moment?
Where can people find you?
