Behind the Style

Sam Mandich is an ex-fashion photographer turned film director based out of Los Angeles. She talked to us about her views on fashion as a storytelling device, how she creates a safe space for her actors on set, and spending too much money in the search for the perfect white tank top. Where are you from? Based now?

I’m from Long Beach, CA and am now based in Los Angeles, CA.

You worked in fashion, and recently have transitioned into film, specifically directing. How has your experience in fashion benefited your film projects?

In my films I take immense care not to overlook the costume design. I began transitioning into film through fashion photography/film, but I’ve always felt a pull towards narrative. My experience in the editorial world strengthened my sense of fashion as a storytelling device, which I’m so grateful for. To me, fashion is a tool to empower and validate the character's emotional experience.

What are some recent projects you’ve worked on?

I just finished editing a short film that I made with Sierra Herrera, a friend and fellow dancer, about our identities as mixed-race women in the performance space, and how that has shaped our work as artists. Sierra and I have known each other since we were 7, and she now dances with some of the most talented artists in the world (like Madonna). Our immensely talented costume designer for the film, Brittny Moore, also grew up at the same dance studio, so the three of us collaborating on this project together was really special. It felt like a homecoming of sorts. We styled Sierra in basic Hanes tank tops and a white Fanci Club dress to get the perfect balance of reality and fantasy. I also just directed a dark comedy about a woman who has agoraphobia written by Daisy Anderson. In fact, we used BARO for our costume design.

What is your favorite part about directing?

I love every step of the process, from the cultivation of an idea to the last day of post, but my favorite part at the moment is working with actors. I am a dancer as well, so my first priority is always providing a safe space for my actors to be vulnerable, and tap into the character authentically. When actors bring a character to life it’s nothing short of magical. Good actors are egoless, and giving them the support they need to do their best work is the most fulfilling part of being a director for me right now.

What is inspiring you right now, in fashion or otherwise?

The author Carmen Maria Machado. I just finally read In The Dream House and Her Body and Other Parties. Life changing.

How would you describe your personal style?

Carrie Bradshaw meets teen boy from the 90s.

Okay before we wrap up, we have a few rapid fire questions for you....

Brands you're loving at the moment?

Paloma Wool. I wish my entire closet was Paloma Wool. I just rewatched Uptown Girls and fell in love with Blumarine again. That dress is just iconic.

If you could borrow any dress from any red carpet look in history, what would it be?

This is so hard! Either Kate Moss at the 1995 Met Gala (spaghetti strap Calvin Klein dress), Olivia Rodrigo at the 2022 Met Gala (purple Versace dress with butterflies in her hair). Or anything vintage Vivienne Westwood. OR when Julia Roberts wore a suit to the Golden Globes. Iconic.

Holy grail skincare item?

Ice roller.

What’s your fashion guilty pleasure?

Spending too much money on finding the perfect white tank top.

Favorite films?

Water Lilies, The Virgin Suicides, Persona, Raw, Spencer, Aftersun, The Red Shoes to name a few!

What podcasts are you listening to?

Poog! And Still Processing.

Where can people find you?

On Instagram and on BARO at @sammymandich.
