What to Wear for New Year's Eve that isn't a Sparkly Dress

December 20, 2023

New Year’s Eve is a time of reflection, anticipation, and celebration. As the clock strikes midnight, we bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one with open arms. It’s also a time when you may feel the pressure to wear something sparkly, or else stick out like a sore thumb!

But what if sequins and glitter aren't your thing? We’ve put together some non-reflective looks that are all up for grabs on BARO. So whether you're borrowing something from stylish friends on the other side of the country or snagging a look from your favorite influencer's closet, we've got you covered. Plus it’s more sustainable than buying new, so you can end the year feeling like a good person. These outfits are a clear ticket to a New Year's kiss and a shower of compliments that will rival any confetti drop. Here's to a year filled with more killer outfits–cheers!

Listen, I know some of y’all are gonna be ringing in 2024 at the club, and I love that for you. But, before you go sleuthing on the internet for some sort of sparkly ensemble, consider something a bit less obvious yet just as sexy.

This satin Collina Strada dress (available to rent on BARO) really does it all. It’s elegant, but that deep V will have people begging to be your New Year’s kiss.

Before you say “Doesn’t this dress feel a bit too summery for the dead of winter?” Remember my cardinal rule (I actually don’t know if I have ever said it) that with the right styling, you can wear anything you want no matter the season.

Getting Down at the Clerb

I think if I were to describe my ideal way to bring in the New Year, it would be an intimate dinner with close friends.

This is how it would go: I arrive at 7:00pm sharp with a batch of freshly baked Alison Roman cookies in hand. My friends greet me at the door to the sound of some Dean Martin holiday tunes. We eat a delicious dinner and the champagne is flowing—maybe we even play a game or two?!

But what do you wear to said perfect evening? This ivory vintage babydoll dress (available to rent on BARO) of course! It’s cute, sexy, and when paired with some black tights and a sleek shoe it creates a look so elevated that your friends are going to be begging you to be on their team for charades.

An Intimate Dinner with Friends

Trends and seasons come and go but one thing I can guarantee is that a sleek black dress will never go out of style.

I may not always know what I am doing, but Mucchia Prada sure does. This silk mini dress from their 2007 Spring/Summer collection is perfect for the NYE that may require a more formal dress code.

Despite the simplicity of the dress, the structured bodice and front pleat detail make the look feel special and elevated. I wouldn’t go crazy with the accessories, keep it simple with a black shoe and some jewelry. The sunglasses may not be entirely necessary (I was channeling Hailey Bieber's 2021 Met Gala Look) but hey, block out those haters!

A Lotta Prada!

Okay, I have a confession to make… I kind of hate New Year’s Eve. Let me elaborate. I love the idea of a fresh start, leaving the past in the past, and even the fact that my gym is suddenly extremely crowded (you gotta start somewhere!).

However, the pressure of having a super crazy, once in a lifetime kind of night just doesn’t really appeal to me. I think it's time to really normalize just chillin at home, having a nice glass of Merlot, and rewatching Romy and Michelle’s Highschool Reunion (a recent rewatch of mine, highly recommend).

But that doesn’t mean you can’t swag out for the occasion! I know the whole concept of this blog is to inspire you to wear outfits that are not sparkly, but these Stine Goya trousers (available to rent on BARO) are essentially sweatpants with sequins on them. Perfect for adding a lil somethin somethin’ for a night in and away from all of the NYE comotion.
